Overview of semiconductor chips designed by Indian companies in 2025
Can India’s Semiconductor VLSI chip design services industry expand from service-based model to product design? In the bustling tech hubs of India and the research labs of India’s premier institutions, a major push in this direction is under progress. Known primarily for providing design services to global semiconductor giants, India’s private semiconductor design sector now has a massive opportunity to go in the direction of designing own branded chips to mark a significant shift toward innovation and self-reliance. This article briefly traces the journey of India’s homegrown chips from year 2015, presenting their development, applications, and the ecosystem driving this transformation.
The tech corridors of Bangalore’s Marathahalli, Mahadevapura, and Whitefield, crowded with semiconductor design services companies. There are also adventurous IC product design companies emerging at multiple locations in India. Two companies Saankhya Labs which is now acquired by Tejas Networks (a Tata owned company) and Signalchip emerged as trailblazers, developing market-ready System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions. Alongside them, academic institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) laid the groundwork for open-source and cost-effective processors, setting the stage for a broader wave of innovation.
