Fujitsu and RIKEN unveil advanced 256-Qubit superconducting quantum computer
Fujitsu Limited and RIKEN have announced reaching a new milestone in quantum computing with the development of a 256-qubit superconducting quantum computer, announced on 22nd of Apr 2025 at the RIKEN RQC-FUJITSU Collaboration Center. This cutting-edge system, which quadruples the qubit count of its 64-qubit predecessor launched in October 2023, positions Fujitsu and RIKEN at the forefront of global quantum innovation. Supported by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the new computer leverages advanced high-density implementation techniques and scalable 3D connectivity to push the boundaries of computational capability.
The 256-qubit quantum computer is a significant step toward practical quantum computing applications, offering enhanced processing power to address complex challenges in fields such as molecular analysis, finance, and drug discovery. Starting in the first quarter of fiscal 2025, Fujitsu and RIKEN will integrate this system into their hybrid quantum computing platform, making it accessible to global companies and research institutions. The platform’s expanded capacity enables the execution of sophisticated error correction algorithms and hybrid quantum-classical computations, fostering seamless collaboration between quantum and traditional computing systems.
