Power GaN device market is expected to be worth US$2.04 billion in 2028

After Infineon’s acquisition of GaN Systems, will the power GaN ecosystem be undergoing a transformation to facilitate a $2.04 billion market by 2028?

The power GaN device market is expected to be worth US$2.04 billion in 2028 with a 49% CAGR2022-2028.
The fabless business model still dominates the power GaN ecosystem in 2023, but some fabless companies are expected to be acquired by IDMs…
Power GaN technology offers various solutions across different levels: epiwafer, device, and system.

According to Yole Intelligence, part of Yole Group, in the Power GaN 2023 report, the primary driving force behind power GaN is still consumer fast chargers and adapters. Noteworthy trends in this domain encompass increased power capabilities (reaching up to 300W) and the emergence of ‘all-GaN’ chargers, leading to a higher GaN component ratio per charger. The application of power GaN is also expanding into other consumer sectors, such as overvoltage protection (OVP) in smartphones, paving the way for a market opportunity of a billion units.

Beyond the consumer realm, two additional growth catalysts for power GaN are anticipated: the automotive and datacom sectors. In the automotive arena, GaN devices are finding utility in a variety of applications. Automotive LiDAR for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) is leveraging 100V GaN devices. The adoption of GaN in powertrains has evolved from a question of feasibility to a matter of timing, as multiple major players in the automotive industry have been engaged in close collaboration with device suppliers for nearly a decade, focusing on onboard chargers (OBCs) and DC-DC converters.

In the datacom field, GaN-based power supplies exceeding 3kW with 80Plus Titanium efficiency ratings are already accessible, offering more favorable form factors compared to silicon-based alternatives. Development efforts are underway for intermediate bus converters (IBCs) involving multiple industry participants. Research conducted by GaN Systems underscores that the integration of GaN in data centers contributes to a more sustainable business model by diminishing operational expenses (OpEx) and reducing the carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint.

With growth spanning across these diverse applications, the projected worth of the power GaN device market is set to reach US$2.04 billion by 2028, exhibiting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 49% from 2022 to 2028.
