TSMC to match FinFETs with ARM's 64-bit cores

TSMC and ARM strengthened their collaboration further on how to produce ARM processor based chips using FinFET transistors in the nodes below 20 nano meters. The collaboration is said to optimize the next generation of 64-bit ARM processors based on the ARMv8 architecture, ARM Artisan physical intellectual property (IP), and TSMC’s FinFET process technology for use in mobile and enterprise markets that require both high performance and energy efficiency.

Both to share the required information to each other so that power, performance and area (PPA) are optimized. TSMC to tune FinFET process for latest ARM cores. The collaboration aimed to improve silicon process, physical IP and processor technology that together will enable new system-on-chip (SoC) innovation and shorten time-to-market.

The 64 bit ARMv8 architecture is aimed at offering silicon for servers and high performance computers such as enterprise computing, network infrastructure and cloud-computing markets.
