Key announcements expected at India Semiconductor Association Vision Summit 2012
When there is so much outcry in U.S. against outsourcing electronics and semiconductor design services to India, there is a blessing in disguise for India to get into its own design and manufacturing. Own design and manufacturing is more rewarding in long-term rather than the short-term benefit from design-services provided to off-shore companies.
Hope we can hear more on India's initiatives in electronics manufacturing and design at this year's Vision Summit 2012 annual-event organized by India Semiconductor Association (ISA), where semiconductor is central to it. India electronics industry's strength is: it is extremely flexible. In the way it has turned into design-services business model from the old product engineering model before 90s, same way it can also now get back into IP creation and manufacturing for the sake of market need; more than anything else. India's demand for electronics hardware to outdo fuel imports is well known news. India is growing in some of the areas of manufacturing such as automobiles, pharmaceuticals and few more such core engineering sectors. India beating China in manufacturing is highly possible, if the Indian engineering community decides. But in Electronics manufacturing, India severely lags behind China and many other regions due to lack of support from Government as well as companies here focusing more on design services to make big profit from off-shore work.
It seems things are changing now. Government has come with highly appreciative initiatives for promoting Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM). On paper every bit of initiative is highly motivating. Even by practical aspect, see the success of $35 Tablet computer. Akash tablet has proven the best value-for-money tablet at a price tag of $35.
India based company should be developing and owning IP on micro-processor and advanced non-volatile memory, and many more such strategic technologies. It is difficult for a private company in India with poor support from government to make IP development a profitable option.
At this year's ISA's vision summit, EE community expects announcement of major initiatives. The Chief Guest for the event would be Shri. Kapil Sibal, Hon'ble Minister for HRD, Communications & IT, Government of India. The Inaugural Address would be given by Shri Sachin Pilot, Hon'ble Minister of State for Communications & IT, Government of India. Other distinguished guests include Shri. R Chandrashekar, IAS, Secretary Dept. of IT and Dept. of Telecom, Government of India and Shri. M N Vidyashankar IAS, Principal Secretary, e-Governance Dept. & Principal Secretary (I/c.), IT, BT and S&T Dept., Government of Karnataka.
The theme for Vision Summit 2012 is: Growth drivers for emerging markets: Semiconductors and Electronic Systems. It is about creating a policy, framework and eco to enable industry capture US$ 400 Billion electronics market by year 2020.
The speakers from Indian electronics industry include Mr. Pradeep N Dhoot, Group President of Videocon, Mr. Ajai Chowdhury, Founder and Chairman of HCL Infosystems. EDA business Gurus Dr. Aart de Geus of Synopsys and Dr. Walden C. Rhines of Mentor Graphics Inc are also among the list of speakers at ISA Vision Summit 2012.
