Semiconductor device sales in September up by 2.7%

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has reported worldwide sales of semiconductor devices of $25.8 billion for the month of September 2011, an increase of 2.7 percent from the prior month when sales were $25.1 billion.

SIA also reported quarter-over-quarter sales growth to 3.5 percent and the quarter-over-quarter growth 14.9 percent for Japan-region due to the progress made in the recovery efforts after hit by Joint Tsunami.

SIA attributes growth due to strong demand for automotive applications and mobile processing in handheld devices like smart phones, tablets and eReaders added to the quarter-over-quarter increase. An updated World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) forecast is expected to be released at the end of this month of November.

In the early 2011 industry was aiming double-digit growth but the Japan's Tsunami and Thailand's flood took a toll on chip industry infrastructure, and the whole supply chain. In 2012, with mass production of 28nm chips by fabs such as TSMC, there is a space for double-digit growth in semiconductor market, praying no untoward things happen in 2012.
