Economic Times' article calls for Government to set up semiconductor fab on its own

Semiconductor chips are becoming so essential, we can't think of any modern industry without them.

India, with a sizable number of electronics engineers and a huge population, has both supply of skills and demand for chips, but lacks a semiconductor fab for the engineering hands to build modern electronic systems made by home grown semiconductor chips and other such devices.

India not having fab is severe drawback not only for electronics industry but also for many industries.
Government has formed a committee and invited for expression of interest from capable investors. The advertisement of this was placed on 22nd of June 2011 in leading daily News Papers, giving 4-week time for interested companies to respond to Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The last date to respond is just 2 days away (20th July 2011).

An article in Economic Times quotes "If our incentives and exhortations have not induced foreign or domestic investors to set up a fab in India , it would make sense for the Centre to set up an industrial fab on its own, rather than waste funds on yet more global solicitation" To read the full article visit:

Like the way the Economic Times article suggests India has to set up an ultra modern semiconductor fab with strong research base to move on with the competition, to reap huge indirect benefits to the overall economy.
