NXP's SmartMX IC receives MasterCard approval

Contactless banking chip SmartMX P5CD012 from NXP Semiconductors embedded in Austria Card's bank card with a half antenna, has received approval for MasterCard PayPass with the industry benchmark transaction speed of 385 milliseconds.

To shorten payment processing time even further, NXP introduces its latest dual-interface SmartMX P5CD016 family, which processes contactless transactions up to 35 percent faster than comparable solutions on the market.

NXP's SmartMX IC family offers enhanced security and flexibility, more data and faster transmission rates. The dual-interface EMV compliant chip provides EAL5+ level Common Criteria certification to ensure that payment cards accomplish the highest security requirements. The latest P5CD016 is fully compatible with the previous SmartMX family (P5CD012), retaining the existing IC platform while adding a much faster CPU and optimizing the power consumption of the crypto processor FameX. This allows customers to leverage their existing designs easily on the latest SmartMX chip without the need for bigger adaptations on their operating system.

The payment markets show a growing demand for multi-applications cards, which can be used for EMV compliant contact or contactless payment and other applications such as public transport and event ticketing, ePurses or loyalty programs.
