ARM, Chartered, IBM and Samsung join hands to develop 32 nm and 28nm SOCs
IBM, Chartered, Samsung Electronics and ARM have announced that, they will develop a comprehensive 32nm and 28nm Systems-on-a-Chip (SoCs) design platform based on high-k metal-gate (HKMG) technology from the IBM-led joint-development alliance.
Under this multi-year collaboration, ARM will develop and license a design platform of physical intellectual property (IP) including logic, memory and interface.
The ARM with its strong focus on cortex processor will play the physical IP provider role and IBM to provide the necessary advanced material and nanometer manufacturing technology. Samsung will make SOCs as per customer or market needs by using these advanced technologies to offer highly less power consuming and feature rich products. Where as Chartered will integrate these technologies for its fabless customers
Overall it's a super combination of technology experts. Only missing-in is an EDA company. As rightly said in the press release "This combination will facilitate design scaling and accelerate the market availability of next generation mobile devices with unmatched performance, outstanding battery life and reduced cost".
