STMicro unveil more rugged and efficient IGBTs for power electronics switching

A new class of IGBTs with a higher breakdown voltage capability of 1350V and a maximum operating temp of 175°C launched by STMicroelectronics suggests these devices for induction-heating applications for appliances such as kitchen hobs, inverter microwave ovens, and rice cookers enabling expanded design margin, more robust performance, and extended reliability under all operating conditions.

IGBT

Higher ower-conversion efficiency is achieved with these new STPOWER IH2 series IGBTs. Low saturation voltage, Vce(sat), which guarantees low dissipation when the device is turned on, is one of the more advantageous criteria. The freewheeling diode improves the efficiency of single-switch quasi-resonant converters working at frequencies between 16 kHz and 60 kHz by having minimal voltage drop and optimum turn-off energy.

STMicro finds in a 2kW application, ST’s new IGBT devices can reduce power dissipation by up to 11%.

The narrow parameter distribution between devices and positive temperature coefficient of the Vce(sat) make it easier to connect multiple IGBTs in parallel for high-power applications.

The first two IGBTS, the 25A STGWA25IH135DF2 and 35A STGWA35IH135DF2, are in production now and available in a standard TO-247 long-lead power package.

Indicative price: starts from $1.39 for the STGWA25IH135DF2 and $1.69 for the STGWA35IH135DF2, for orders of 1000 pieces.
