5 new SoCs from StrataGX series revealed by Broadcom for enterprise and SMB networks

Broadcom Corporation has unveiled five new additions to its StrataGX line of System-on-Chips (SoCs) that offer high-bandwidth Gigabit connectivity to enterprise and small-to-medium business (SMB) networks. These devices are designed as companion devices to the StrataGX SoCs that integrate a high performance processor, Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch, GbE physical layer transceivers (PHYs), USB 3.0 and traffic accelerators all on a single chip. They deliver more than 10x speed and 40 percent more power efficiency to enterprise and carrier class access points, branch office routers and business class integrated services routers.

Broadcom's StrataGX series is designed as an integral part of a wide solution to offer stand-alone platforms to deliver the Gigabit wireless rates that 5G WiFi can deliver. The integrated features enable higher performance and scale for business users to concurrently stream voice and video for applications such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and video phones 10x faster without the buffering and interruptions associated with current networks.

The newest additions to the StrataGX series of SoCs also meet the growing demand for multi-media distribution. The new chips double the cache size and integrate a digital signal processing unit and multimedia engine into the core to address the increased requirements for wireless bandwidth and higher CPU throughout the enterprise network.2

5G WiFi acceleration :
Increased reliance on wireless networks, the explosion of video consumption, and growing number of wireless devices are all putting stress on legacy 802.11a/b/g/n networks. 5G WiFi addresses these challenges, providing mobile device users to stream digital content between devices faster, and simultaneously connect more wireless devices to enterprise networks, while conserving battery power.

Features:
1. 10x performance improvements with increased CPU headroom allows new applications such as cloud services
2. USB 3.0 delivers up to 10x the transfer speed of USB 2.0 for high-speed storage
Integrated GbE PHY/switch and regulators enable flexible, scalable solution for multiple GbE router platforms
3. High-performance 5G WiFi Gigabit connectivity to multiple SMB and enterprise devices
BCM53014, 53015, 53016 SoCs engineered for wireless enterprise access points and enterprise switch control plane
4. Pin-compatible to and are fully software compatible with BCM53010, 53011, 53012
BCM53017, 53018 SoCs permit additional performance enhancements to the StrataGX hardware/software compatibility for faster time to market

Ed Redmond, Broadcom Vice President & General Manager, Compute and Connectivity
"Earlier this year we introduced the industry-leading StrataGX series of SoCs to enable new levels of performance in video applications, such as video conferencing. By preserving and maintaining the hardware footprint and package compatibility of the original StrataGX series with our five new higher-performance chips, Broadcom has ensured that new features such as updated ARM cores and doubled cache size can be quickly integrated into next-generation products with minimal design complexity and faster time-to-market."

The five new SoCs in the StrataGX series, BCM53014, 53015, 53016, 53017 and 53018, are currently sampling with production slated for 1H 2013. The StrataGX series is now in production.
