Sigma Designs introduces 2 media processors with integrated HNPA connectivity
Sigma Designs has introduced its SMP8680 and SMP8682 media processors which delivers integrated HPNA connectivity for IPTV and hybrid Set-Top Boxes (STBs). Both media processors feature 3D video, integrated graphics processing, video scaling, DDR3 memory support, customizable UI and a power efficient CPU that can deliver Over-the-Top (OTT) content.
“The demand for HPNA is strong in emerging markets both with multi-room STBs and MDU deployments for broadband distribution”, said Waheed Rasheed, Sigma Designs’ VP of product marketing for media processors. “Our strategy to incorporate integrated HPNA in our secure media processor product line offers connectivity at a reduced cost, a smaller footprint and with lower power consumption. The SMP8680 and SMP8682 also maintain software backward compatibility with the SMP8670 and the SMP8652, easing the migration path for STB OEMs and ODMs.”
The new SMP8680 and SMP8682 migrate to an improved software SDK4.0 which comprises a new porting layer called SAPI (Sigma API) that enables fast time to market porting of Hybrid STB middleware. Implementing SAPI guarantees software compatibility for future system-on-chips (SoCs) which decreases overhead and improves time to market. Sigma Designs also offers proprietary application frameworks for developing Webkit-HTML5 applications or Adobe Air applications and several silicon reference implementations of OTT applications, like Netflix and VuDu. This combination provides reduced development time for OEMs and ODMs. The SMP8680 consists of an HDMI input port to receive and process HD video content enabling applications such as HD Skype and HD pass through.
The two products are to be in mass production by December 2012.
