4.7 µF/50V ceramic capacitor in 3216 size; largest capacity in its size

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has reduced the size and increased the capacity of its GCM series of chip monolithic capacitors for automotive applications.

By developing new materials, Murata has reduced the size from the 3225 size (3.2mm x 2.5mm) mainly used to the 3216 size (3.2mm x 1.6mm), while at the same time expanding the capacitance from 2.2µF to 4.7µF (rated voltage 50 V type) and from 4.7µF to 10µF (rated voltage 25 V type).

Murata claims that the realization of 4.7 µF in a rated voltage 50 V type capacitor is a world first, and is the largest capacity in the world for its size.

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors and tantalum capacitors have been used in automotive power supply circuits, but these can now be replaced with GCM series products.

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors and tantalum capacitors are used for smoothing applications in automotive power supply circuits where large-capacitance are required. However, ceramic capacitors that are resistant to high temperatures are more suitable for automotive applications that require heat resistance. Therefore, by increasing the capacitance, GCM series products can now be used in place of the aluminum electrolytic capacitors and tantalum capacitors used.

In addition, as the electrification of automobiles progresses, the number of electronic components used is also increasing, and miniaturization is demanded. 3225 size products have mainly been used for these applications, but the development of new materials has allowed Murata to realize a size reduction to 3216 size.
