Smallest and low cost LED based LCoS pico projector system solution released by Intersil

Intersil Corporation has introduced the pico projector system 'Pico-qHD' based on a LED solution.

Intersil's Pico-qHD is developed for low power and cost sensitive embedded or accessory pico projector applications. The projector provides a fully integrated reference design that includes a high volume production optical engine, hardware, firmware and customizable design files.

Pacific media associates forecasts pico projector sales of 58 million units per year by 2015.

The platform is based on Intersil's ISL97901, an integrated buck/boost RGGB LED driver customized for pico projector display applications. A 2.0 mA resolution provides white balance setting, yielding uniformity over production units and throughout the life of projector. Its electronics system can drive up to 1.5A LED current and enables pico projector engines with brightness levels of 20 lumens.

The LCoS pico projector reference design integrates ISL97901 buck-boost LED driver, TW8835 LCD video processor, ISL9307 power management IC, ISL9110 buck-boost converter, ISL9230 battery charger and the ISL58333 OEIC sensor in addition to Intersil's products.

Features
1. Optimized solution for field-sequential LED based LCoS pico projector systems
2. 5.5cc optical engine with 7mm height
3. Compatible with up to 1080p video inputs with automatic scaling to qHD (960x540) display resolution
4. HDMI input video interface
5. Optical engine requires 1W

"The emerging pico projector market will transform social sharing, but cost has been one of the biggest adoption barriers," said Susan Hardman, senior vice president of the analog & mixed signal products group at Intersil. "Our pico projector technology offers the lowest solution cost, while easily customizable reference designs provide customers flexibility to adapt pico projectors for their specific needs."

"Micron's partnership with Intersil is a model of efficiency and true viability," said Negin Oliver, director of display marketing at Micron. "With Micron's E330 qHD optical engine and the robust system from Intersil, our companies are poised to succeed in the emerging pico projector industry."

The Pico-qHD reference system is priced at $13,995.
