Wide input switching regulator IC from Micrel to achieve high power density
Micrel Inc has announced a wide input synchronous switching regulator IC MIC28510 from the family of SuperSwitcher II. The MIC28510 regulator provides step-down conversion with better than 94% peak efficiency and delivers up to 100W of power in a 13cm2 device. Micrel says that this solution eliminates the need for a dual-stage conversion approach for point-of-load applications.
The regulator chip has protection features such as pre-bias safe start-up, over temperature protection, fold back current limit and short circuit protection.
The MIC28510 provides fast transient response for applications such as base stations, power-over-Ethernet, home security systems and solar inverters. The MIC28510 integrates low-Rdson, high-side and low-side power switches to provide an output down to 0.8V.
"By combining an exceptionally wide input voltage range, superior stability and transient response with innovative packaging that ensures the best power density and thermal performance across the entire load range, the MIC28510 delivers unprecedented performance and flexibility," said Brian Hedayati, marketing vice president for the analog division at Micrel. "This places the MIC28510 in the sweet spot for designers tackling the most demanding applications."
