ARINC 825 compliant CAN controller from Holt with integrated transceiver

Holt Integrated Circuits has introduced a ARINC 825 compliant CAN controller with an integrated transceiver. The device meets the requirements of both ISO 11898-1:2003(E) (CAN protocol) and ISO 11898-5 (CAN transceiver).

ARINC825 is the Controller Area Network (CAN) standard for future Airbus and Boeing aircraft and the framework for all ARINC specifications based on CAN.

Controller Area Network (CAN) devices have become a popular data bus solution in the avionics industry, most notably since the release of the ARINC 825 specification in November 2007, which standardized the use of CAN in avionics applications. Holt has leveraged its expertise in providing mixed signal ARINC 429 and MIL-STD-1553 solutions and produced the first ARINC 825 compliant CAN controller with an integrated transceiver. The device is capable of operating in the temperature range -55oC to +125oC.

"The HI-3110 provides the most compact and reliable implementation of CAN in the avionics industry today, providing an easy-to-use host SPI interface and connecting directly to the CAN bus via the internal transceiver" said Anthony Murray, Director of Business Development at Holt.

The device features a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) to comunicate with the external microcontroller. The device also has transmit and receive FIFOs that can hold up to eight CAN frames each. The HI-3110 has numerous modes of operation, including monitor mode, loopback mode and a low-power sleep mode. Automatic wake-up from sleep mode is also possible. Other features include 8 maskable ID filters with filtering on the first two data bytes, permanent dominant timeout protection, +/-58V short circuit capability on CANH, CANL and SPLIT pins and a transmit history FIFO.

The HI-3111 is a digital-only version (no transceiver) and can be used in applications that require an external transceive.

Package: 18-pin SOIC or compact 44-pin QFN.
