Digital PWM IC with 800V bipolar power transistor for AC/DC converters

iWatt has released PWM IC coded iW1810, which integrates an 800V bipolar power transistor and other features that is normally achieved using external devices. The iW1810 is targeted for industrial power supply products such as rugged offline power supplies for household appliances, motor control and smart meters from high-line surge voltage. iW1810 offers 5% output voltage regulation and consumes less than 100mW in standby mode. iW1810 is rated to operate at 64 kHz switching frequency enabling the use of small size magnetics and and capacitors. iWatt says 3W AC/DC adpater power supply can go into compact 25mm x 25mm x 15mm form factors using only 21 components.

iWatt says it’s EZ-EMIR technology increases EMI margin, up to 10dB, reducing the number and size of EMI filter components. This power IC also eliminate opto-coupler and secondary-side shunt reference commonly used for isolation. iWatt’s AC-DC products use digital algorithms to replace traditional analog control.

This IC operates from a universal AC input voltage of 100-240 V and delivers output power of 3W with voltage regulation of +2% in typical isolated power supply designs with primary-side regulation. The 800V rating of internal MOSFET is high enough to protect from voltage surges and spikes common in industrial power source.

The iW1810 uses adaptive multi-mode PWM/PFM control to flatten efficiency curves without causing audible noise. Safety features include over-voltage, short-circuit and current sense resistor short circuit protection.

“The iW1810 combines the performance benefits of digital power with an integrated 800V power transistor for ease-of-use and ample power supply voltage de-rating,” said Zahid Rahim, vice president and general manager of iWatt’s AC/DC business unit.

Power supplies designed with the iW1810 are compliant with worldwide regulatory standards such as EN55022B, CISPR22B, Energy Star, CEC and ECC, as well as safety standards such as UL1950 and IEC950.
