LED lamp in camera phone programmable as torch or flash by using ADI's LED driver IC

Analog Devices has made available the ADP1650 1500-mA white LED driver which can help phone designers to provide white LED torch light as well as flash light in mobile phones for taking pictures using camera in the phone. The ADP1650 is inductive-based LED driver with programmable I²C-compatible interface to drive LEDs with current rating up to 1500 mA, two independent TxMASK1 inputs and a 4-bit ADC. ADI says that this driver provides high efficiency at 85% at the typical battery voltage (90 percent peak) which reduces high levels of input battery current during flash and limits battery current drain in torch mode.

"Camera quality is one of the most important features for consumers when selecting a handset, and since many camera phone images are taken spontaneously and in dimly lit areas or while talking on the phone, a quality flash is expected," said Jose Rodriguez, technical director, Power Management Technology Group, Analog Devices.

Mr. Rodriguez added, "Maximizing light output for limited battery current and a shrinking PCB area is a key design challenge for portable device designers. The ADP1650 white LED driver meets this challenge."

The key features of ADP1650 include:
1. ADP1650 Integrates a programmable 1.5-MHz or 3.0-MHz synchronous inductive boost converter, a tiny, 1-mm high, low-cost, 1-µH power inductor, and 0603 case-size input and output capacitors in a power flash design of less than 17 mm2.
2. The new LED driver operates efficiently over the entire battery voltage range by maximizing the input- power-to-LED-power conversion and minimizing battery current draw during flash events.
3. ADP1650 is designed to operate using the limited battery current available for flash.
4. ADP1650 chip connects easily to the latest image sensors and image processors.
5. Comes in a compact 2 mm × 1.5 mm, 12-ball WLCSP package.
6. Provides two independent TxMASK (transmit mask) inputs permit the flash LED current and battery current to reduce quickly during a power amplifier current burst and protects the handset.
7. The I²C-compatible interface enables the programmability of timers, currents, and status bit readback for operation monitoring and safety control
