New HB LED driver from Maxim in boost, buck-boost and buck configuration

Maxim has introduced MAX16833, a high-voltage HB LED driver available in boost, buck-boost, and buck configurations. Maxim says that this device meets the reliability requirements of high-power automotive lighting applications such as DRLs (daytime running lights), position lights, turn signals, and high-/low-beam assemblies.

The key features of MAX16833 are:
1. Allows design of more fault-tolerant, reliable LED driver applications.
2. Due to its wide input-voltage range it can sustain battery load-dump peaks up to 65V during normal operation.
3. The integrated high-side dimming p-channel MOSFET driver and high-side current-sense amplifier detect short-circuit events. This short-circuit protection is provided between the output and ground, and also between the input and output.
4. These drivers also allows a single-wire connection to the LEDs, thus reducing LED-to-driver wiring cost and complexity.
5. Provides output overvoltage and overtemperature protections, as well as a fault-detection output.
6. Another feature is its internal frequency dithering, which improves EMI.

Package: 16-pin TSSOP package

Operating temperature range: -40degC to +125degC

Price: starts at US$1.53
