New chip by NEC to reduce blurring of low-resolution images on HD monitors

NEC Electronics has launched high-resolution IC µPD9280GM to Sharpen Full HD image and video quality. The µPD9280GM can reduce blurring that occurs when low-resolution images and video are expanded and displayed in 1920 x 1080-pixel high-definition (HD) monitors.
With HDTV growing faster but the video content, which are still available in low-resolution format of 720x480 pixel makes this chip useful to improve the quality of the low-resolution video. This new application-specific standard product (ASSP) produces crisp images in HD TV broadcasts by boosting 720 x 480-pixel standard definition (SD) image data. µPD9280GM can support one billion colors (30-bits color depths).
NEC said other solutions used to process low-resolution image data into full HD images need large-capacity external memory devices and more processing support.
Where as this device jointly developed by NEC Electronics and NEC Central Research Laboratories enables very high-resolution processing with just one frame of image data. This device is an addition to NEC Electronics' market accepted IC µPD9245GJ for HD image processing.

Images captured by CCTV, surveillance camera and also the images from video endoscope capsule might find this chip useful to get a better view of the image.

Availability: Now in samples volumes in July 09
Price: Each US$20
