Primary side regulation PWM controllers with a power MOSFET
Fairchild Semiconductor launched a new series of primary-side regulation (PSR) pulse width modulation (PWM) controllers. This family called as EZSWITCH packs primary-side regulation PWM controller with a power MOSFET to achieve tight constant voltage (CV) and constant current (CC) regulation without complex secondary-side feedback circuitry. In comparison to ringing choke converter (RCC) discrete approach, this approach is said to be simple with less extra components and reduction in total system costs including production, BOM and quality. The FSEZ1216 and FAN102 are with in the specifications of ENERGY STAR EPS 2.0 standard. This EPS 2.0 specification mandates a six percent efficiency-increase over EPS 1.1 to qualify.
The EZSWITCH series minimizes standby power by <0.15W through its proprietary green-mode function that provides off-time modulation to linearly decrease the PWM frequency under light-load conditions. With a start-up current of 10ľA, these PWM controllers facilitate the use of a large start-up resistance for further power savings. In addition, the EZSWITCH series features a frequency hopping technique to meet EMI requirements in battery chargers for mobile phones and other portable devices.
