Class-D audio amplifier IC for consumer audio applications

The new CS3511 from Cirrus Logic is a stereo 10-watt analog-input Class-D audio amplifier IC for consumer audio applications such as active media speakers, docking stations, hybrid radios, flat-panel displays and mini-shelf home stereo systems.

The CS3511 employs delta sigma modulator for low distortion and reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI). This devices uses spread spectrum switching controller technology to achieve finer resolution compared to traditional pulse-width modulation (PWM) methods. With continuous feedback and feedforward paths that reduce the inherent non-linearity of switching power MOSFETs and to improve stability at high switching frequencies, the CS3511offers a total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) performance of 0.025 percent at five watts and 0.019 percent at one watt.

"The CS3511 was designed to provide our customers with a great sounding amplifier that provides the efficiency of Class-D amplification while greatly simplifying the system design challenges associated with EMI," said Carl Alberty, director of Marketing, Cirrus Logic Mixed Signal Audio Products.

The CS3511 supports single-ended inputs or fully-differential inputs for improved common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) and operates from single 9 V or 12 V voltage supplies. It also offers built-in protection and error reporting with automatic recovery from over-current, thermal overload and under-voltage conditions.
