DC/DC converter from Intersil for cell phone RF power amplifiers

Intersil Corporation launched a new DC/DC converter, ISL9109, for cell-phone RF power amplifiers, which can provide fast start up from standby mode with very low current and excellent transient load response.

This new device is a 1.6MHz synchronous step-down regulator designed to resolve the inefficiencies often seen with RF power amplifiers of cell phones, particularly at low output levels. It has power switches that can deliver 1.5A output and features a standby mode that enables rapid startup.

Some of the key features are

1. Draws only 22 micro-amps standby current
2. Supply voltage ranges from 2.7V to 5.5V
3. Single Li+ cell, three NiMH cells or a regulated 5V input can be used.
4. 1.6MHz PWM switching frequency reduces the size of external components.
5. Soft-start, over-current protection and thermal shutdown.

Pricing: $1.93 each in 1K-piece quantities.
Packaging: 8-Ld DFN
Size: 2mm x 3mm
