HVArc Guard MLCC capacitors with polymer terminations

Vishay Intertechnology released HVArc guard surface-mount X7R multi-layer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs) with optional polymer terminations designed to withstand higher levels of mechanical stress and to decrease capacitor failures related to mechanical cracking.

The new VJ HVArc MLCCs launched are VJ0805, VJ1206, VJ1210, VJ1808, and VJ1812. The new technology confines the failures to the capacitor, thus reducing the number of damaged components on the circuit board or damage to the complete device itself.

Other features these devices are,

1. Prevent surface arc-over with voltage ratings from 250 VDC to 1000 VDC
2. Feature capacitances ranging from 100 pF to 0.27 µF.
3. Offer twice the voltage breakdown in air of standard products
4. Eliminate the need for conformal coating, and can replace wire leaded through-hole capacitors.
5. Allows for higher capacitances than standard high-voltage MLCCs, and facilitates the use of smaller case sizes in high-voltage products.

The device is optimized for applications including buck and boost dc-to-dc converters, voltage multipliers for fly-back converters, and lighting ballast circuits.

Availability: Samples and production quantities of the device are currently available, with
lead times of approximately nine weeks.
