Texas Instrument's new PFC controller to reduce digital TV energy consumption

Texas Instruments launched two power management chips, UCC28061, a dual-phase power factor correction (PFC) controller with natural interleaving technology and TPS54331, a new SWIFTTM DC/DC power management converter, which can help to increase the energy efficiency and reduce system size and cost in Digital TVs.

TI's new UCC28061 controller holds the features like,

Smaller electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters,
Smaller or fewer output capacitors and smaller boost inductor volume,
Operates in dual-phase transition-mode which lowers overall system costs
Dual power stage architecture makes thermal management easier by spreading the heat through more components.
Has phase management and burst mode features, which provide efficiency at various power levels, including standby mode.

The device TPS54331 has the following features

Uses "novel eco-mode switching technique" to increases energy efficiency
Has a wide input range of 3.5 V to 28 V
Output voltage adjustable down to 0.8 V
Supplies up to 3-A output current
Very low operating current of 110-uA and low 1-uA shutdown current.

Package: 16-pin and 8-pin SOIC
Price: $1.30 for the UCC28061 and $1.35 for the TPS54331 in 1K quantities.
