AMD’s new stream processor delivers a performance exceeding 1 Tera Flop
Advanced Micro Devices has announced a new graphic processor chip called FireStream 9250, which can execute more than 1 Tera-floating point operations per second (Flop).
This product is further addition to the earlier Firestream family member 9170. 9250 includes double precision floating-point hardware implementation and has 1GB of GDDR3 memory.
In its press release AMD quotes “Developers are reporting up to a 55x performance increase on financial analysis codes in computers integrated with stream processor based GPUs as compared to processing on the CPU alone”.
The power consumption is less than 150 watts and offers a power performance of eight giga-flops per watt.
