Multicore media and baseband processors from LSI for wireless apps

LSI has introduced the SP2704 and SP2716 StarPro, a new multicore media and baseband processors based on LSI StarCore digital signal processor (DSP) core targeting wireless, wireline, and enterprise infrastructure applications.

LSI says, the four-core SP2704 and sixteen-core SP2716 can scale to more than 3,000 simultaneous media gateway channels. The new processors also provide more than twice the processing capacity and consume less power than competitive DSP architectures.

All StarPro media and baseband processors are equipped with embedded CPUs, integrated high-density memory which eliminates the need for external memory in many applications, and carrier-class packet-processing engines that support advanced quality of service (QoS) and traffic management.

"The continued proliferation of new video services and advanced 3G and 4G wireless networks requires higher-performing and more efficient DSP processors," said Linley Gwennap, principal analyst with The Linley Group. "These third-generation StarPro processors will enable OEMs to develop higher-density, more energy-efficient wireless gateways and base stations."

"Wireless operators need powerful, highly scalable solutions to handle the exploding demand for broadband, real-time video services," said Jon Devlin, DSP product line director, Networking Components Division, LSI. "The StarPro SP2704 and SP2716 enable networking and telecommunications OEMs to build and deploy high-capacity, media-rich, any-to-any wireless services across the network with minimum cost and risk."

Availability: Expected to sample to customers in February, 2010.
