Two-string high-brightness LED driver IC from Maxim for automotive backlighting apps
Maxim has introduced the MAX16838, a new two-string HB (high-brightness) LED driver IC that integrates a DC-DC switching boost regulator or SEPIC switching converter, two linear current sinks, and all necessary power MOSFETs. The MAX16838 LED driver is suitable for automotive, and LCD backlighting applications.
The key features of the MAX16838 LED driver IC are,
Integrated, 2-channel, 20mA to 150mA linear LED current sinks
Adaptive voltage optimization to minimize power dissipation in linear current sinks
Operating input voltage ranges from 4.75V to 40V or 5V ±10%
5000:1 PWM dimming at 200Hz
Open-drain fault indicator output
Output overvoltage and overtemperature protection
Programmable LED current foldback at low input voltages
200kHz to 2MHz resistor programmable switching frequency with external synchronization
Current-mode control switching stage with internal slope compensation
Enable input
The MAX16838 optimizes conversion efficiency by automatically adjusting the switching converter's output voltage to the voltage supply required by the LEDs. If an LED fails open or short, the driver automatically disables the affected string while keeping the others working, thus improving system reliability.
