Semtech's new charge pump LED driver ICs for LED backlighting in handheld devices

Semtech has announced the release of new SC654, SC657 and SC658 LED backlight charge pump drivers for 6, 5, and 4 LEDs. The SC65x platform integrates a high-efficiency charge pump, multiple low-dropout current sink regulators, and the one-wire SemPulse interface, and optimized for single-cell Li-ion battery applications.

The key features and specifications of the SC65x family of LED driver ICs are,

Operating input voltage ranges from 2.9V to 5.5V
High efficiency charge pump driver system with three modes: 1x, 1.5x and 2x
Six (SC654), five (SC657) or four (SC658) adjustable current sinks
29 current settings from 0mA to 25mA
SemPulse single wire interface
Up to three LED grouping options
Individual on/off control for each LED
Backlight current accuracy ±1.5% typical
Backlight current matching ±0.5% typical
Up to three zones/banks of LED current settings
Optional fade-in/out with three programmable rates
Charge pump frequency - 250kHz
LED float detection
Automatic sleep mode (LEDs off ): IQ = 60µA (typ.)
Shutdown current at 0.1µA (typical)

In new handheld systems, the SemPulse interface is highly preferred than I²C serial bus because it provides a simple means of programming while consuming only one GPIO on the baseband or applications/graphics processor. The interface is simple, robust, and very tolerant of sloppy timing caused by interrupts elsewhere in the system.
