Integrated key-switch controller with 8 GPIOs/LED drivers from Maxim

Maxim has introduced the MAX7360, a key-switch controller that featuring multiple key press/release detection on up to 64 keys with 8 extra GPIOs/LED drivers and advanced ESD protection. These extra GPIOs/LED drivers used for keypad backlighting and control, LED indicators, port expansion in remote areas of the application. The MAX7360 is suitable for the applications such as smartphones, cell phones, pocket PCs, printers, PDAs, and other portable consumer-electronics.

Individual key codes for each press and release are stored in a FIFO register to enable monitoring of multiple key-switch events. The key-switch drivers interface with metallic or resistive switches with on-resistances up to 5kOhms. There are eight open-drain I/O ports, which can be used to drive LEDs. The maximum constant-current level for each open-drain port is 20mA.

The key features of the MAX7360 key-switch controller are,

Integrated ESD protection: ±8kV IEC contact discharge, ±15kV IEC air-gap discharge 256-Step PWM Individual LED Intensity Control
User-Configurable Key Debounce (9ms to 40ms)
Key-switch interrupt (Active-Low INTK) on each debounced event/FIFO level, or end of definable time period
Four I²C address choices
400kbps, +5.5V tolerant 2-wire serial interface with selectable bus timeout
