New battery- monitoring IC for portable handheld devices from ST

ST has introduced the STC3100, a battery-condition monitoring IC for 'fuel-gauge' style indicators that shows the operating time remaining and is ideal for electronic and portable handheld device applications.

The STC3100 integrates functions to monitor the battery voltage, current and temperature. It has a built-in coulomb counter to calculate battery charge, and stores the data at 16-bit resolution for retrieval by the system controller. And access through I2C interface, enabling the controller to create an accurate graphical representation of remaining battery-operating time. The STC3100 supports extra functionality by providing one external pin for use as a detector input or to drive an LED indicator. Each IC is pre-programmed with a unique 64-bit identifier, which enables traceability of individual battery packs or subsystems.

Other key features are,

Battery voltage monitoring with 0.5% accuracy
Coulomb counter with 12/14-bit AD converter, +/- 80 mV input voltage range
Internal temperature sensor
32 RAM bytes for backup storage of battery or application data
8-byte unique device ID
Low power: 100-ľA operating, 2-ľA standby
One general-purpose I/O

Package: DNF8 3 x 3 mm and miniSO-8 package
Price: Each $1.20 for 1k pieces
