New MCUs from Freescale for portable medical gadgets

Freescale Semiconductor has introduced five microcontroller (MCU) product lines specifically designed for medical applications.

The key features of these devices include low power, integrated LCD segment display, USB connectivity and built-in analog circuitry.

"With the introduction of these five medical MCU families, engineers have the power at their fingertips to design the medical equipment of tomorrow," said Aiden Mitchell, director of industrial and multi-market MCUs for Freescale. "We're creating best-in-class MCU solutions with the portable medical designer in mind, and these medical devices provide the accuracy, connectivity and flexibility that have become synonymous with Freescale products."

These MCU chips are tailored for portable medical applications, such as blood glucose meters and heart rate monitors. Other applications include diagnostic and therapy solutions, such as electrocardiograms (ECG), patient monitors and medical lab equipment.

The product line includes
Flexis MM: Consists of new pin- and peripheral-compatible 8- and 32-bit MCUs (MC9S08MM128 and MCF51MM256)

Flexis JE: Low-power 8- and 32-bit products (MC9S08JE128 and MCF51JE256) with all of the same features of the Flexis MM products, but without the integrated AFE.

LH Series: 8-bit MCUs (MC9S08LH) has a built-in LCD driver and a high-speed 16-bit SAR analog-to-digital converter.

Availability: Now in samples and volumes in third quarter of 2010.

Another news related medical electronics from Freescale Semiconductor is that it has received ZigBee Certified product status for its ZigBee Health Care wireless health and wellness processing platforms. The ZigBee Certified products status is awarded to products that have been tested and met criteria for interoperability that enable wireless devices to securely and reliably monitor and manage noncritical, low-acuity health care services.
