2:1/1:2 active multiplexer from Maxim to switch and redrive SAS/SATA signals
Maxim Integrated Products has introduced the MAX4986, a 2:1/1:2 active multiplexer designed to switch and redrive SAS/SATA signals from one source to one of two destinations. Protection against noise at the output is provided by integrating four programmable signal-amplitude buffers. It features programmable input equalization and programmable output preemphasis to compensate for circuit board loss which aids in preserving signal integrity. It is capable of switching and redriving signals at SAS/SATA 6Gbps data rates, it is used in workstations and servers that must carry signals through connectors and over long cables, stripline, and microstrip while maintaining signal integrity throughout the system.
The MAX4986 uses high-speed amplitude detection on the inputs and amplitude squelch on the corresponding outputs, therefore supports SAS/SATA out-of-band (OOB) signaling. To prevent unwanted noise from entering the system input signals less than the user-selected OOB threshold are detected as off and not passed to the output. It features an enable pin that save power by placing the device in standby mode while the system is inactive.
Operating conditions of MAX4986 needs a supply voltage of 3.3V, and is fully specified over the 0°C to +70°C commercial temperature range.
