Low priced new MB86C30A USB 3.0-SATA Bridge IC

The new MB86C30A USB 3.0-SATA Bridge IC from Fujitsu packs USB and SATA signal communication control circuits, protocol and command control circuits with a high-speed encryption/decryption engine on a single device

Fujitsu Microelectronics has used it's own physical layer device (PHY) to keep chip cost lower compared to other similar devices in the market . The MB86C30A supports the high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 data speeds.

As a security feature, the MB86C30A IC integrates less processor burdening embedded Advanced Encryption Standard (AES engine protects confidential data from being stolen, unintentionally leaked or lost, and to protect data following the disposal of storage devices). This is a vital requirement for connecting external devices such as hard disk drives.

The MB86C30A bridge IC has two AES operation modes: Cipher Block Chaining (CBC), a mode for encrypting block data, and XTS, the XEX encryption mode with tweak and ciphertext stealing. Both the modes are ideal for hard disk drives in terms of security, strength and speed of encryption/decryption. The key lengths supported are 128bit, 192bit and 256bit.

"We expect our chip to be embedded in devices to be released by the end of this year."

Fujitsu Microelectronics plans to strengthen and expand its lineup of USB 3.0 standard products for storage devices."

The growing data speeds of USB coupled with availability of cheaper external storage devices in the form of portable electronic gadgets enable PCs to handle multimedia rich content easily across various USB interfaced devices and systems.
