Wi-Fi modules from Broadcom for embedded systems

Broadcom Corporation has unveiled a new Wi-Fi module based on its BCM4319 wireless LAN MAC/baseband/radio chip. These Wi-Fi modules can be interfaced to embedded systems to provide them with wireless network capability.

The new Wi-Fi module includes an embedded processor and unique "self-hosted" Wi-Fi networking library and software application stack. These modules enable the addition of secure, interoperable Wi-Fi functionality via a simple serial port using a basic command set that does not require any significant changes in product micro-controller architectures, suggests Broadcom.

The applications include smart energy systems, and cloud-based health and home management services.
Home Appliances such as washing machines and air conditioners and Consumer Electronics such as digital cameras and audio products can be networked with computers for file sharing and access to internet-based storage and applications.

Another application suggested include these Wi-Fi modules can be built into sensors and monitors for remote and cloud-based healthcare, fitness and security capabilities.
