Renesas's AE470G MCU for M2M wireless communication applications

Renesas Technology Corp. launched the new AE470G secure MCU for M2M (Machine-to-Machine) wireless communication applications.

Built around the AE-4 CPU core with a 16-bit computing element and bus width, operating at a maximum internal frequency of 10 MHz (at 3 V), it integrates 144 Kbytes of EEPROM with a wide operating temperature range of -40 to +105ēC in a compact package suitable for small M2M devices.
The new MCU is equipped with security capabilities, such as encryption functionality; to enable it to perform security related processing in M2M communications among multiple machines. The M2M communication can be either via a wired or wireless network connection and involves the automated sending and receiving of information.

Some of the other features of the device are,

1. The EEPROM supports continuous operation over extended periods of time.
2. 500,000 rewrite cycles, and a data storage period after programming of 10 years.
3. Very fast write/erase times of 2.4 ms for page-unit rewrites, 1.3 ms for page-unit erases, and 1.1 ms for page-unit overwrites.
4. EEPROM is of the metal oxide nitride oxide silicon (MONOS) type.
5. On-chip mask ROM capacity of 288 Kbytes, which can accommodate a general-use OS, supporting complex processing.
6. 8K bytes of on-chip RAM
7. One I/O port and a half-duplex UART
8. A random number generator
9. A coprocessor with DES encryption support
10. An interval timer

Typical applications include machines with M2M support such as electric, gas, or water utility meters, vending machines, and automatic parking facilities, monitoring systems and tracking systems.
