Vishay launches automotive-grade 4-quad silicon PIN photodiode

Discrete and passive electronic component maker Vishay unveiled what it claims as industry’s first 4-Quadrant Si PIN photodiode in SMT package for automotive electronics.

With high and wide-band (690 nm to 1050 nm) sensitivity, K857PE offers low 0.1 % crosstalk and virtually no tolerance between its segments making it a choice for range of sensor and control applications not only for automotive but also for consumer, and industrial electronics.

Epitaxial technology based and AEC-Q101 qualified photodiode packs four monolithic PIN diodes each with an active area of 1.6 mm2 integrated into a single 4.72 mm by 4.72 mm by 0.8 mm top-view, surface-mount package. K857PE is opaque to stray light from the sides helping it deliver high signal to noise ratio. The photo response is linear allowing it to detect rain and and make it better choice for light sensors applications, industrial automation systems, laser beam alignment, and virtual reality applications.

RoHS-compliant K857PE features 8.5 µA reverse light current per segment at Ee = 1 mW/cm2 and an 850 nm wavelength. With the ability to operate over a wide temperature range of -40 °C to +110 °C, it features a daylight blocking filter, ± 60° angle of half sensitivity. This device does not contain halogen and offers a floor life of 168 h in accordance with J-STD-020.

Vishay is sampling this device now and production volumes expected in Q4 2020, with lead times of 10 weeks.
