Cubic shaped DC link power caps for traction and high rel apps

TDK is offering cubic shaped power capacitors with rated voltage range of 1100 V to 2300 V and in the capacitance range of 365 µF to 2525 µF. These new capacitors called ModCap are suggested for DC link applications. These type-conditioned caps designed to withstand recurrent pulse currents of 5000 A with rated current in the range of 105 A - 180 A. The maximum permitted hot spot temperature is 90 °C.

Available in two sizes of 243 x 169.5 x 90 mm or 258 x 215 x 115 mm, these capacitors can be fitted very close to IGBT modules allowing them to have short lead lengths. When the IGBT is shut with no-current, any high spiking of voltage is stopped due to the very low 14 nH self-inductance of the capacitors. This saves the circuit from having any snubber capacitors and makes parallel connections of capacitors easy. Suggested typical applications are compact converters for traction, renewable energies and industrial applications.

With artificial resin-filled plastic housings, these caps are UL94 V-0 compliant. Also fulfills IEC 61071, IEC 61881-1, EN 45545-2 HL3 R23, for fire and other safety requirement making them suitble for high-rel applications including trains.
